The CSS team for Microsoft will present new performance and advanced diagnostic tools and features for the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine including:
- Management Data Warehouse
- Activity Monitor
- Enhancements to Dynamic Management Views
- RML Utilities for SQL Server 2008 (READTRACE/OSTRESS)
- Extended Events
This session is based on training material Microsoft provides its own support staff on how to use these technologies to assist customers on a variety of SQL Server 2008 Database Engine issues.
The session will be presented in the form of real-world customer scenarios with live demonstrations of how to use these tools to identify, diagnose, and provide mitigation for specific types of performance related problems.
Seminar Leader Profiles: Bob Ward and Keith Elmore
Bob Ward is a Principal Escalation Engineer in Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) based in the Microsoft Regional Support Center in Irving, Texas. He has worked with Microsoft since 1993 and has now supported every release of Microsoft SQL Server from 1.1 for OS/2 to SQL Server 2008. Bob has been presenting topics on SQL Server at the PASS Summit since 2003. His background in the computer industry spans 22 years and includes database development projects with companies like General Dynamics, Harris Hospital, and American Airlines. Bob graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Baylor University in 1986. Bob has co-authored the book
SQL Server 2005 Practical Troubleshooting: The Database Engine including chapters on advanced data recovery and troubleshooting critical errors.
Keith Elmore is a Principal Escalation Engineer in Microsoft and has worked in the Microsoft Customer Service and Support site in Irving, Texas since 1995. He focuses primarily on SQL engine performance troubleshooting and optimization. He has helped drive improvements into the product, including features such as sys.dm_exec_query_stats and SQL Server 2008’s Management Data Warehouse. He has released several publicly available tools to investigate performance issues including the Performance Dashboard Reports for SQL Server 2005 and the RML Utilities for SQL Server.
