PASS Community Summit 2008: Spotlight Session (Database Administration)

Database Governance to the MAX! How to Get Your SQL Serve ready for F1 (Formula 1) Racing

Rajinder Gill

Session Details

Any car that enters the F1 race MUST perform at the top of its level for the entire duration of the race. A minor lapse will result in elimination. These cars go through a robust set of preparation, configuration and testing. This is exactly how a mission critical SQL Server running a $billion dollar business should perform. There is zero room for performance degradation or risk in downtime. This session is based on some of the most advanced content and examples of building workload governance in SQL Server from a real-world perspective. Database Workload Governance (in short DWGov) was first introduced (in a larger setting) at the PASS 2007 conference in Denver. The session had an overwhelming response and was ranked 5th best overall (DBA track) by attendee feedback. While the 2007 PASS session was focused on building intelligent governance using SQL Server 2005 features, with the introduction of ‘Resource Governor’ feature in SQL Server 2008, this presentation takes the concept of governance to a completely new level. Content presented in this session is based on a highly sophisticated set of examples which been built and continuously enhanced on SQL Server 2008 CTPs. Concepts such as Query execution, plan generation and optimization, hardware resourcing, capacity measurement and planning and application scalability will be discussed in detail. This session will discuss how to achieve high scalability high availability through governance.
